General Information for the Part III student



Registration for the Part III Examination and the lecture programme

Course is generally conducted between the months of May and October leading to the Part III examination which is generally held in November.

SLIA makes annual announcement regarding the start of the lecture course for SLAI Part III. It is compulsory for Applicants who wish to sit for the Part III examination to follow this course.

To apply for the Part III Examination Applicants shall have;
  • successfully completed or exempted from the SLIA Professional Practice Examination Part I & II,
  • shall posses 104 weeks of SLIA monitored full time* Practical Training (work experience) under a corporate member of the SLIA after obtaining SLIA Part I, of which 52 must be gained after obtaining SLIA Part II and,
  • shall have obtained the Graduated Membership of the SLIA.(Please note that having a student membership is a prerequisite for the Graduate membership one)

*or equivalent part-time as decided by the SLIA for the first 52 weeks after obtaining SLIA Part I

General Mileposts of Part III Program

These are the general mile posts for the Part III Program. Prospective candidates shall query from the BAE for exact dates for each year as these may vary from year to year. SLIA will also publish public notices on Newspapers for important dates like Date of Part III Examination etc.

  • After successful completion of (or be exempted from) SLIA Part II Prospective candidates shall commence work experience under a Chartered Architect as indicated in the ‘Guidelines for Candidates of SLIA Professional Practice Examination Part III’ and register with the BAE for Counselling for the same. Please contact BAE to register for Counselling.
  • A candidate shall be eligible to sit for SLIA Part III examination in the year in which he/she is able to complete 104 weeks of practical work experience (as indicated in the ‘Guidelines for Candidates of SLIA Professional Practice Examination Part III’) by 31st December.

Register for the Part III Lecture Course and the Examination. Registration for Part III online Portal is a compulsory part of this registration. Candidates shall provide BAE with a valid and function email for this purpose. BAe will provide a username and a password via this email. See below for more information.

Candidate shall have generally obtained the SLIA Graduate membership and the Student membership by this time if not they are advised to apply for theses memberships immediately.
Before 31st January
Commencement of the Lecture course 1st Week of May
Final eligibility assessment for SLIA Graduate membership and the Student memberships and the Part III examination, pending work experience assessment up to 31st December 31st of May
Part III written examination 2nd week of November
Viva Voce 2nd week of January of the following year
Oath taking ceremony for those who have successfully completed Part III examination 1st week of May of the following year

Applying for Various Memberships and Registrations

Applying for the Student membership

To apply for this membership the Applicant shall have successfully completed or is following an Architectural Program accredited by the SLIA.

Applying for the Graduate membership

To apply for this membership the Applicants shall have obtained 52 weeks fulltime or 104 weeks part-time (four standard days with a minimum of 8 hours per day)practical training experience under a Corporate Member of the SLIA as stipulated under regulations of the SLIA and be a student member of the SLIA, after successful completion of SLIA Part I Examination or equivalent.

Applying for the Associate membership

To apply for this membership the Applicants shall have successfully completed Part III of the SLIA Professional Practice Examination conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects.

Registering with the Architectural Registration Board

To apply for registering with the Architectural Registration Board the Applicants shall have successfully completed Part III of the SLIA Professional Practice Examination conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects.
